Welcome to Ultrasound Scans- Motherwell! We’re here to provide you with high-quality, compassionate care, and we want your first visit to be as comfortable and stress-free as possible. Here’s what you can expect when you come in for your ultrasound scan:
After you book your appointment, you will receive a confirmation email. On this email there is a registration form attached that we would like you to fill in prior to arrival. This form includes contact information and medical history, so we can ensure we have all the details necessary for your care. If you don’t have an email address, we would advise that you turn up 5mins early to your appointment slot to fill out the form in clinic.
When you arrive at our clinic, you’ll be greeted by our friendly staff members. IF you have not filled out the registration form prior to arrival you will be asked to fill it out before your appointment in the waiting area. If you have any questions about the forms or your visit, feel free to ask our team for assistance.
Before your ultrasound, one of our qualified sonographers will meet with you for a short consultation. They’ll discuss your symptoms or the reason for the scan, and any relevant medical history. If you’re here for a specific procedure like an ultrasound-guided injection, the sonographer will explain the process in detail, making sure you understand each step.
For most scans, you will be asked to lie down on a comfortable examination table. The sonographer will apply a gel to the area being examined — this gel helps transmit sound waves and improves the quality of the images we capture. You may be asked to change positions during the scan, or even take a deep breath, depending on the area being assessed.
For abdominal scans, you may be asked to fast for a few hours before your appointment. For other scans, such as those for women’s or men’s health, you may be asked to follow specific instructions in advance (like drinking water or avoiding urination). The ultrasound itself is typically painless, though you might feel some mild pressure as the sonographer moves the probe over your body to capture clear images. The procedure usually takes between 20 and 45 minutes, depending on the type of scan.
If you’re coming in for an ultrasound-guided injection, such as for pain relief or steroid injections, the procedure will be explained in full before we begin. After preparing the area, we’ll use the ultrasound to carefully guide the needle into the correct location. You may feel a small pinch or pressure during the injection, but the procedure is quick and generally well-tolerated.
Once your scan is complete, you’ll be given time to clean off any remaining gel. The results of your scan will be reviewed by one of our clinicians, and if necessary, you’ll be provided with further guidance or a follow-up plan. For many scans, we can provide you or your healthcare referrer with a report on the same day or within a few business days, depending on your needs.
If you’ve had an ultrasound-guided injection, you may be monitored briefly to ensure that you’re feeling comfortable, and we’ll provide post-care instructions to help you with your recovery.
